I’m a monitor person. I can never have enough screen real estate. I recently bought a second video card to put in my computer at work so I can setup 4 monitors:

They’re over two different bus types (pci-e and pci, unfortunately I don’t have two pci-e slots to setup in SLI), so I had to disable Xinerama, which was painfully slow. But just having 4 monitors to use is a godsend.

Presidential Nomination

Tonight on a late-night talk show, a presidential candidate (I’m trying to be as ambiguous as possible) officially declared his candidacy for the presidency of the United States. His site is hosted at my former employer. While I no longer work there, it’s still fun to see something you worked on/with get that kind of exposure. I remember deploying a few of his servers back in the spring, and it did provide a little bit of a rush.

Granted, I still don’t think I’d vote for him, but it was fun watching the announcement nonetheless.

Don’t see that every day

I95 was backed up today on the way to work, extending my commute at least 45 minutes. Not that in and of itself is rare, in fact it hardly is. But the reason today was because of an injured red-tailed hawk. When you drove by, the bird was on the shoulder of the road, with two police cars surround it, waiting until the game commission could pick it up. It wasn’t affecting northbound, but everybody slowed down to take a gander anyway, so we were crawling as well. Luckily the bird’s alright.

New Job

As I alluded to in the Hope I didn’t burn too many bridges post, I have left HostMySite and began working at a new job. The new position is a Systems Administrator for a media relations company, with my primary responsibility managing the cluster of Linux servers.

On the one hand, it sucks to leave HostMySite. The work environment was great, there were a lot of people I truly considered friends, and it was a great experience. It was my first real experience working in a world class data center, which was invaluable. Plus, I got the chance to learn from some really bright and accomplished people in this field. And, most importantly, I was working with people I honestly considered friends.

The new position is the position I was working towards, however. The ability to be working as a linux sysadmin day in and day out is invaluable, and the field we’re in is exciting. I’m looking forward to the job responsibilities. I’ve got a lot of work to do, and a lot to learn, but I’m up for the challenge.

I wish everyone at HostMySite the best, and hope they all keep in contact. And I’m still looking forward to shooting everyone that goes in airsoft!

Hope I didn’t burn too many bridges

Made a decision Saturday night that I’m worried burned a few bridges. It’s a decision that I had to make, and I’m sure of that, for more than one reason. I’m just worried that I’ve screwed over some people I consider friends, and that they may not understand or might misinterpret why I had to make the choice I did. We’ll see. I’m expecting the worst.

Customers just asking for it

So…A customer comes into chat with one of our tech support guys. Asks him to show him how much disk space he’s using on one of our Linux accounts. The tech comes over, asks me how to do it I show him, and I go “hm…that directory has 6.2 gigs in it”. Go into that directory, and it has a folder called “utils” and “img&videos-xrated”. Interesting. The site contained Playboy shots, x-rated videos, and Warez (including Photoshop 7 and Divx movies). I checked the IP he chatt’d in on, and the IP in the FTP logs, and sure enough he transferred the files up himself.

How stupid do you have to be to upload illegal content, then come in and ask questions about how much disk space you have left? Why don’t you practically tell us you’re hosting illegal content? It’s particularly bad when we’re one of Adobe’s bigger ColdFusion clients in our industry. We can’t allow Photoshop to be sitting up there.
